Van Dijk Concedes Team Faces Crisis, Questions Teammates on Accountability

The Liverpool skipper has issued a scathing evaluation of Liverpool's disappointing title defence, confessing the title holders are in a mess and failing manager Arne Slot while questioning whether all squad members is taking responsibility for the current downturn.

The Dutch defender struggled to hold back his frustration after Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat by Nottingham Forest, a result that saw the Reds in the bottom half of the top-flight standings with a negative goal difference. The club's chair was present at Anfield to witness Liverpool’s sixth defeat in seven league games, their eighth loss in 11 matches across every tournament, and a performance that fell apart against a opponent that started the day in the drop zone.

Poor Second Half and Set-Piece Woes

The captain described Liverpool’s start to the second half as “not good enough” and admitted “panic kicked in” as soon as the Forest player gave Sean Dyche’s team the advantage. The first goal was the ninth concession Liverpool have allowed from dead-ball situations in the Premier League this season.

“There was a great build-up to the match but in a fixture you are dealing with facts and the facts are we conceded a set piece in the opening period and a poor concession at the start of the second half,” stated the defender. “We are definitely letting him down, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. You look at yourself first and then you support teammates, you help each other get out of this crisis because at the present time it is a mess – that's the reality.

Van Dijk’s Demands: Step Up

Van Dijk typically addresses the media after a game as part of his role as team leader. This time was distinct, however. His voice was much louder – audible enough that any teammate in the Anfield tunnel could listen in – and he expressed visible fury while challenging the squad to respond. “You should be angry,” he emphasized. “The key point for me is that everyone has to be accountable.” When questioned whether this is occurring, Van Dijk replied: “It's unclear. But it's essential. That's crucial I expect the boys to do. It’s not easy during tough periods but we must act if we want to get out of this.”

Summer Signings and Broader Issues

Liverpool invested almost £450 million to replenish a title-winning squad in the summer but have regressed, with new arrivals struggling to contribute so far. The captain insisted that Liverpool’s issues extend past the new recruits. “It’s tough for all involved,” he said. “My expectation is for everyone to be answerable on the field. This is necessary in order to motivate one another, to improve collectively. When someone is pressing, you have to follow the effort. These are fundamentals but they're lacking enough.”

The Dutchman added: “In the current term we lack any consistency, we allow far too many goals, we are losing battles and all share the blame for it and I trust everyone sees that. We have to accept duty to reverse the situation and it is easy to point fingers but unity is essential. We have been through it together and won the league and everyone was part of it, and when you go through a challenging phase you have to stick together and avoid blaming others.

“You have to be a man and face the toughness and persist, repeatedly because surrendering is not an option then you are in the wrong environment in my eyes, because this club has been going through numerous challenges over those years and we’ve consistently emerged of it. However, that doesn't imply it is easy, it’s tiring but there is no other way.”

Looking Ahead

The upcoming match in the domestic league is a visit to London Stadium next weekend, after the midweek visit of the Dutch side in the Champions League. Van Dijk commented: “Wednesday is another opportunity so what am I going to do, go home and cry? No, I'll go home and analyze how we can turn this around and hopefully that is the collective focus as well.”
