The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter officially in the works—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
Given that the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.
“There are some potential directions about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a superior concept. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
