The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage makes Real Madrid history in a pivotal European match against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the option to play for either country at senior international level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they play in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Lamine opted for Spain, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club chase trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he said following the success at Manchester.
