While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miamiâs Little Havana neighborhood.
âThis animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,â stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
âExcept perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,â she went on. âMay this pig enjoy a long and happy life without fear.â
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a local firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling âsix-sevenâ â deriving from a hip-hop line â often for no discernable reason. The craze became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently declared â6-7â its top term for the year.
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge âaway from grills and cookwareâ, according to the ceremony's official statement.
âThe pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the holiday season,â said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
âIt represents the character of Miami: joyful, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.â
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they toasted the pig's pardon.
