The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
