The Lions of Teranga's Rising Star Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of throughout our chat. This serves as a powerful symbol for a dream he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Year and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to the title and being named best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Currently, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”
