The Latest Casual Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Wait Times

Over the weekend, the game developers launched a new playlist titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option resembles the regular Breakthrough format but features a few notable adjustments:

  • Every squad has just eight human participants, with the rest made up of AI-controlled opponents.
  • Activities performed by real players award complete experience points, while bot actions provide reduced XP.
  • Only two locations are available: Siege of Cairo and Empire State map.
  • Elements like Dogtags, achievements, and stat tracking have been turned off.

So essentially, this mode delivers on its name: it's a casual take of Breakthrough. On the surface, you might think it's a good idea, as it gives more options for players seeking different ways to enjoy the title. However, if video games has shown one thing, it is that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, a lot of BF6 players are mad.

Community Reactions: Anger to Support

"People want real players. Avoid making the errors of your rivals," states a response to the mode reveal. "Truly disappointing idea," says another. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user remarks, "I have no idea where we are going with this title," while someone else lists all the issues they believe to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."

However, amid the criticism, there are players sharing how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants prevent it from being a complete grind but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "The community fails to see that there are gamers who have lives and can't play this title all the time. Allow them to strike a balance," adds a different comment. A response via social media explains that as they're "a parent gamer with limited time, this is great for me," while another applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."

Constructive Concerns and Player Input

Despite the support, there are valid points to complain about Casual Breakthrough. Some users have pointed out that it will make wait times even longer for different playlists due to the large amount of options in the game already. On a similar note, certain regions often face AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of human gamers, despite it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.

Finally, one of the biggest grievances is that Battlefield Portal was meant to offer complete rewards, including AI matches, but that was removed when they attempted to remove bot farms from the system. Thus Casual Breakthrough seems like the community compromising in the middle, according to forum feedback. A different user labels this mode as the developers "dropping the ball significantly, I had so much fun in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to adjust it?"

Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?

If the development team has demonstrated something to date with Battlefield 6, it is that they're paying attention and responding to player input. Assignments being too difficult were adjusted very quickly, as did the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, if their data indicates this recent mode isn't performing to their standards, they will not hesitate to change it again.
