The former Brazilian president taken into custody after being deemed a risk of fleeing

Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which included plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brasília.
