The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors returning from a devastated terrain with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs assert that violations are ongoing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, consistent with how it denies everything it is charged with. Yet as young survivors are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, we are told, is what unity manifests as.

The contest, notably banned Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed peace has devolved into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
