New York state AG has rolled out a new reporting form urging locals to share images and footage of ICE operations across New York. This action follows a shortly after a high-profile immigration operation shook Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting mass outcry.
A US congressman announced during a news conference that four US citizens were taken into custody and kept for "nearly 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Protests broke out in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"Every New Yorker has the right to live without fear," state officials stated in a release.
"Anyone who observed and recorded immigration enforcement yesterday, I ask you to provide that footage with my office. We are pledged to reviewing these reports and investigating any legal breaches."
The portal offers fields to submit photos and videos of the operation, plus a area to specify location information. When submitting, users must mark a checkbox that confirms that "authorities may use any materials, images, or footage in a public document, including in a court case or government document."
The Chinatown raid, which observers say involved dozens of federal agents, happened in a well-known area of NYC where counterfeit handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are regularly available en masse – frequently to visitors.
Footage of the operation show multiple masked and armed personnel securing and holding a man, and shoving away witnesses. Throngs of residents followed the officers down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was observed moving along the Manhattan avenues.
During a Wednesday press conference featuring the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, said that four nationals were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no situations where nationals should be taken for no reason." He clarified the individuals were let go on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," he remarked. "This represents a militarized effort to create conflict. It is simply a justification to provoke conflict for federal officials to bring in the troops to stop conflict that they have created."
Outrage over the immigration operation escalated – each of the political contenders condemned the operation, including NY's governor.
"Repeatedly, the current administration chooses oppressive displays that generate terror, not safety. It must stop," one mayoral candidate stated.
NYC community groups spoke out also.
"ICE targeted the neighborhood with armored transports, masked agents and riot gear to go after local sellers working to survive. This action had nothing to do with community security and was entirely about terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," said the leader of a rights organization.
Agency rules prohibits the detention of US citizens and the bureau has said it refrains from take into custody US citizens. Yet, investigative journalism has found that more than 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by ICE during the period of the existing leadership.
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in the state and across the US recently.
A mid-October raid in central NYC was the initial documented operation on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Protests targeting ICE are commonplace including claims of aggression and cruel conditions.
Most recently, a document submitted by civil rights groups stated medical neglect of pregnant women in government custody.
