Nutrition Assistance Scheduled to Expire for Over 40 Million Throughout Prolonged Government Closure

Federal agriculture authorities stated on Saturday that nutrition assistance payments under one of the country’s largest social assistance programs will not be distributed during the coming month because of the continuing government funding lapse.

Shutdown Extends Into 25th Day

The government shutdown lasted nearly a month when the announcement was made, which followed demands from hundreds of Democratic representatives asking the department to access emergency reserves to pay for the upcoming nutrition payments.

“Bottom line, funds are depleted,” the department confirmed. “Now, no payments will be distributed” starting next month.

Millions Affected

Over 40 million Americans rely on these monthly payments, according to federal data. Some regions, like New Mexico, reliance on SNAP is as high as a significant portion of citizens.

A memo obtained by journalists indicated that USDA officials chose not to tap emergency reserves to cover next month's assistance.

Legislative Deadlock

Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree regarding how to finance and restart federal agencies.

A statement from the director at a prominent policy organization suggested that the administration had chances to take earlier action to ensure continuous assistance.

“Officials were able and expected to made moves weeks ago to get ready to use these funds,” the comments added. “Conversely, it may choose not to use them in an effort to gain political advantage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to push upper chamber Democrats to support a spending bill that would reopen government operations.

Emergency Measures

State leaders from two affected states issued emergency declarations recently to free up resources for hunger relief expecting SNAP benefits not being issued next month.
