New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, was not quick to announce this decision immediately following his electoral win in November.
"My choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of directing all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani in a statement.
Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will always live within me and the work I do," he said.
During his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
However his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his modest Astoria apartment.
Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.
The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
His former home is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.
Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the housing expenses rises faster than what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
