New Year's Revelers Told to Dress Warmly with Snow Predicted Across the UK

Weather experts have indicated a frosty commencement to the new year, with snow likely over large parts of the UK. Celebrants are advised to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Proceed Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be essential," stated the weather service.

Displays Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Temperatures are expected to be low, so warm wraps essential, said forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Broad Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

  • Transport is anticipated to be impacted.
  • People are advised to plan for delays for trips on the road.
  • Disruptions and cancellations are expected on the transport network.

Temperatures Expected to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Warnings Released

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this meant the weather was expected to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a expected uptick in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.

The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is utterly paramount.
