Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
