In a significant career move, Emma Coates has left her position leading the England WU23 national team to assume the role of head coach for NWSL franchise Bay FC.
Coates succeeds Albertin Montoya, who led the San Jose-based club during its inaugural two seasons in the top-flight American league. Montoya stated in September his intention to resign at the end of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC finish second-bottom in the league standings.
âIt has been a privilege to serve my time with the FA,â remarked Coates. âIt has been instrumental in my development both on and off the pitch. I am now prepared and eager to push myself in a fresh challenge.â
Since taking charge in 2023, Coates managed the England U23s through matches including a narrow win over Norway in the European U23 League and a 4-2 friendly defeat to the United States. She will be joined to the NWSL is her England assistant, Gemma Davies, a former Aston Villa manager in the Womenâs Super League.
The club's chief executive, a one-time Football Association technical lead, highlighted Coates's abilities: âCoates is an outstanding tactician, but she also has a demonstrated history of nurturing talent to thrive domestically and internationally.â
âCoates excels at leading of people and culture and has the football vision we were seeking,â she continued.
Bay FC had a contrasting start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and suffering a postseason defeat in its debut season before struggling to a near-bottom placement in 2025.
The Football Association's new technical lead, Gavin Step, bid farewell to the outgoing coaches: âWe thank Emma and Gemma for their contributions and wish them all the best with their new challenge. Emma, with Gemma, has played a pivotal part in fortifying the pipeline between the young Lionesses and the first team.â
âTheir work has directly influenced the development of many promising talents who have earned call-ups to senior Lionesses,â he finished.
Since taking over Mo Marley in 2023, Coates has been integral to the rise of multiple players to the England senior side, including playmaker Lucia Kendallâwho netted her first Lionesses goalâand attackers Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
An extensive process for successors to fill the roles is now underway, as the FA looks to continue the development of the WU23 program in the coming years.
