Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
