Amateur players will have an opportunity to claim one million Australian dollars when they compete against world-class athletes - headed by world number one Carlos Alcaraz - in a winner-takes-all point prior to the Australian Grand Slam

Organizers of the Melbourne major have announced the Million Dollar One Point Slam, which will pair 10 amateur players against elite athletes in a elimination competition at the tournament grounds

This Innovative Competition Operates

Competitors are set to play 'the decision-making game' to decide who takes the serve or return position, and whoever wins the point will advance to the next round

The winner of the event will receive approximately half a million pounds

For comparison, players who advanced to the penultimate round of the men's or women's singles in the 2025 Australian Open won over a million Australian dollars

Previous Similar Events

The US Open hosted a revamped, standalone combined gender tournament in late summer which encouraged top singles players to compete, with the victors receiving a million-dollar prize

The Melbourne tournament held its inaugural quick-fire event earlier this year, but the prize fund was A$60,000 and it generated little publicity

The Russian player was the only top-10 player competing, and his campaign concluded when he sent the one and only serve permitted failing to clear the net in his quarter-final

Tournament Details

Officials have not said exactly how the event will function, but it is projected to mirror a comparable structure to the most recent iteration

The top competitors will be permitted to make one service and the amateurs on two occasions - as is the standard practice in traditional tennis

While it is uncertain how the draw will work, there will be multiple elimination stages and the location will be the Rod Laver Arena rather than the alternative court

The final stages will be held in a night session instead of midday timing

Competitor Requirements

Local players - or overseas competitors who have signed up with Tennis Australia - can enter 'One Point Slam' events at their local tennis clubs

The victors of the community events will then go into a selection process, with one amateur player from every state and territory selected to compete in the 'final competition' in a nighttime event on mid-January

There will also be a qualifying draw in the final month which amateurs, lower ranked pros, celebrities and athletic celebrities can enter

It commences on early January and the successful competitors will go into the midweek 'final showdown' with the other eight amateurs and top-ranked athletes

"Whether you're an amateur or a pro, the overall victor will receive the reward. Applications will start imminently at venues nationwide"

Tournament officials mentioned there were "more big names to be revealed shortly", while the official website indicated "well-known figures" would be participating
