One of the co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch of a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he plans to independently develop the controversial product within a personal collection highlighting causes the company has been prevented from speaking out about.
This latest development intensifies the continuing tension among the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
Mr. Cohen revealed through an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become an emblem of support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which match those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that originally established in 2016 to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Mr. Cohen indicated how he will develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years of involvement, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy was undermined following corporate moves to curb its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
