Barry Manilow announced that he received a diagnosis with cancer of the lung and will undergo an operation.
The 82-year-old singer, whose parade of high-spirited hits from "Mandy" has made him one of pop musicās most beloved showmen, will have surgery to remove part of his lung in an effort to combat the condition, which is at an early phase.
āFor those who have been following, I recently suffered from six weeks of a severe cough followed by a relapse of another five weeks.
āDespite the fact that I was past the infection and returned to the spotlight in Las Vegas, my attentive medical team ordered an MRI just to ensure that everything was OK.
āThe MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left side that requires removed. Itās incredible chance (and a great doctor) that it was found so early.ā
He has postponed a number of forthcoming concerts, but indicated he would be back on stage by the February holiday for his longstanding residency in Las Vegas.
He added: āThe doctors do not believe it has metastasized and Iām having examinations to confirm their diagnosis. So, thatās it. No chemo. No radiotherapy. Just home remedies and favorite shows.
āIām looking forward to until I rejoin my familiar venue in Las Vegas for our Valentineās weekend concerts.ā
Manilow is presently in his 16th year of a show in Nevada. The singer has spent decades in the public eye and revealed he is gay in 2017, after wedding his longtime partner and manager in secret in 2014.
The duo were in a clandestine relationship for over 35 years. Last year, Manilow discussed how crucial his husband had been to him during his ascent to stardom in the 1970s.
āDuring my rapid rise to fame, it was just crazy. And, you know, going back to an empty hotel room, you can find yourself in a lot of trouble if you, you know, youāre alone evening after evening,ā he said.
āBut I found my partner right around when it was exploding. And I didnāt have to go back to those isolated suites. I had a partner to be vulnerable with or to celebrate with.
āI wish that aspiring artists donāt have to go back to those hotel rooms by themselves, because you might succumb to pitfalls. I never did. But it was quite isolating until I met Garry. And then it was fun.ā
