A large-scale search and rescue operation is actively ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for two unlocated sailboats transporting aid cargo journeying from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
The Mexican government has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying no fewer than nine total personnel, per a official statement.
The vessels had been scheduled to reach the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their arrival, authorities reported.
The island nation has leaned on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the nation endures repeated power outages across the country.
"Both skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and each boat are equipped with appropriate navigational gear and signalling equipment," an official involved in the effort said.
The nine individuals on board are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had carried 14 tons of relief supplies to the nation.
That boat, dubbed "a modern Granma" after the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to launch the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, medicines, formula milk, cycles and provisions.
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led initiatives to bring essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the island nation came into effect.
The United Nations have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with more than 50,000 surgical procedures called off in Cuba because of energy rationing.
Diplomatic tensions have been ramped up in recent months, with remarks from several officials highlighting the delicate nature of bilateral relations.
Responding to certain statements, a high-ranking Cuban official declared that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that initial phases of talks were initiated, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The Mexican navy stated it was dedicated to using every available asset at its disposal to find the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the crews.
To date, there has been no official comment on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
